Write custom instructions

Guide how your assistant behaves and speaks on calls.

Custom instructions are free-form guidance for how your assistant should behave on calls. You'll find them under Agent settings → Voice, below the identity settings.

Turning on the greeting and writing custom instructions in the Voice tab.
  1. 1

    Open the Instructions box

Open Agent settings and go to the Voice tab. Below the name and voice, the Instructions box is where you shape how your assistant talks. Just above it, the Greet on start toggle decides whether the assistant opens each call with a short greeting or waits for the visitor to speak first.

  2. 2

    Write clear, specific guidance

Set tone, boundaries, and how to handle common situations. Keep it short and specific. For example:

Always greet visitors warmly. If asked about pricing, give a range and invite them to book a consultation. Keep answers under three sentences.
Instructions guide behavior and tone. Facts belong in Knowledge, so don't put opening hours or prices here.
  3. 3

    Save and preview

Save your changes, then use the live preview (in the Install tab) to hear your assistant exactly as visitors will, before you publish.

Common questions

What shouldn't go in instructions?

Keep facts like opening hours and prices out. Those belong in Knowledge. Instructions are for tone and behavior.

How long should they be?

Short and specific works best. A handful of clear lines guides the assistant better than a long essay.
